Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji, the eighth emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty, was one of the few emperors in Chinese history with exceptional artistic talent. Not only was he a master of painting, but he also excelled in calligraphy. According to Chinese historical records, he is regarded as one of the most accomplished calligraphers outside the traditional Four Great Calligraphers.
Huizong’s calligraphy is particularly renowned for his Shoujin Script (Slender Gold Script) and Cursive Script. Among his masterpieces, the “Thousand Character Classic in Cursive Script” stands out as a timeless example of his wild cursive style. This work, written on a nearly 12-meter-long cloud-dragon patterned paper, showcases bold, fluid strokes that are both vigorous and unrestrained. The dynamic and commanding energy of the piece makes it a spectacular sight to behold.
